THE DIVAS OF THE RING

Photo: Professional wrestler Gloria, one of the smartest and classiest ladies of American professional wrestling.

The professional women wrestlers are more glamorous, aggressive, business oriented, more money driven and oriented than college female wrestlers. Wrestling is a career (long or short time, it does not matter) for the divas of the ring. In school, college students wrestle for fun. In real life, in the ring, women wrestlers are show-women, professionals and exhibitionists! In school, college wrestlers need good grades to stay in college and earn a degree. In the ring, professional female wrestlers need their looks and natural assets more than anything else. In college, wrestling is an extra-curricular activity. In the ring, professional wrestling becomes a show, a sport entertainment, a tragicomedy, a way of making a living and earning bread and butter.

What are the characteristics of women’s professional wrestling?

In other words, what it takes to transform a next door girl into a professional wrestler? Many things, including but not limited to: Sexy looks, sex appeal, charisma, character, stamina, physical strength, agility, showmanship, the “art of faking it and making it”, agility, hard training, observed diet, long hours exercises, tough training, kissing asses, compromises, deals on the wheels, the ability and willingness to accept defeat, losses  prefixed matches, injuries, humiliation, deception, and to carry on regardless of the outcomes and pre-destined matches results and consequences. In short, guts, showmanship, sex, diplomacy, strength and determination.

HOW BRIGHT AND EDUCATED ARE THOSE FEMALE WRESTLERS?

Photos: Trish Stratus, one of the legendary figures of contemporary wrestling sport entertainment. She is a radio show host, a model, a very successful entrepreneur and formidable kicks and punches thrower…and a millionaire! She is doing better than you and us!

More than you think. They are bright (not academically, but in real life), shrewd, smart, businesswomen, practical, fun, very fun, good company, generally giving and generous, good spenders, spontaneous, slick, talented in various areas such as aerobics, acrobatics, dance, fitness, modeling, make-up, wardrobe “tactics”, disguise and very talkative. Some are talented speakers and some others are born provocative mistresses of ceremonies. A considerable number of them are college educated, published authors and musicians.  And of course, a great number of those deadly fighting machines are porno stars or at least porno models!

THE DIVAS OF THE RING

 For instance, Wrestler and ring announcer Lilian Garcia can sing beautifully and admirably the "Star Spangled Banner." Her voice is sultry and crystal clear. Garcia's first single, "Shout," was released last fall and became a hit. She's currently working on writing an entire pop/rock album. Garcia has been singing since she was a small child in Madrid, Spain. In her early teens -- by then Garcia's family had relocated to Columbia, S.C. -- she was singing with a band at clubs around the area; her mom chaperoned so she could get in. Garcia went on to graduate cum laude from the University of South Carolina. Recently, she's performed in her current hometown, New York City, including several times at WWE's Times Square complex, The World. In November 2001, she sang on WWE's float in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. As the ring announcer on RAW, Lilian has performed the national anthem at hundreds of WWE events, as well as at several NBA games and at a Chicago Cubs game at historic Wrigley Field.

Photos, left: Caryn Mower, a Hollywood stunt woman, actress and a professional wrestler. She is one of those rare beauties who have brains, education, style and enormous esthetical strength.

Caryn Mower has been a Hollywood stuntwoman since 1992 and has appeared in several movies and TV shows, including "Buffy The Vampire Slayer," "Ally McBeal," "Baywatch," and "Red Shoe Diaries." She first decided to pursue wrestling after a failed bid to land a part as a model for a comic book.

Professional wrestler Gail attended the University of Toronto and Ryerson University. Among the topics she studied was kinesiology, the science of human movement, a subject that was one of the majors of fellow Canadian Diva Trish Stratus, who, of course, has been Women’s Champion on multiple occasions, as it was reported by the national media.

Chyna Shryne is a tough competitor. She is a college graduate. She majored in Spanish literature and civilization. She was so smart that she graduated from College in two years instead of four. After graduation, she traveled to Europe and became fluent in three more languages, Spanish, German, and French.

Linda McMahon is the Chief Executive Officer of the World Wrestling Federation. As the CEO, Linda has a good mind for business, and she knows what is good for business. While the other members of her family try to dictate what should be done, Linda spends her time making important behind-the scene-deals. At 18, she got a degree in French at East Carolina University before working as a receptionist for a Washington law firm. She ended up with a job in probate, which is where she got a lot of her business training. Mrs. McMahon is one America’s most successful business persons and recognized leaders in the world of sales, executive management, promotion, public relations and leadership. She reigns over a billion Dollar empire. Without any doubt, she is to be recognized as one of the most brilliant minds in corporate America.

ARE WOMEN CRAZY??

They fight everywhere. In the mud. In oil bath. In foam. In substances. Naked. Topless. Against men. And they do it for money! At least, the honest ones would admit it.

THE QUEENS OF WRESTLING

Women in the A Sumo Ring!?

Perhaps, one of the most popular form of female entertaining wrestling is wrestling in various liquid and sticky substances, such as water, oil, mud, jelly, foam (and probably more). Some advantages of such styles can be noticed. First, shining wet bodies look even more attractive. Then, lubrication reduces frictions of contestants’ bodies. Besides, the mud wrestling helps to hide nudity a bit. Mud or oil wrestling matches are often held in restaurants, in clubs or outdoor. A special “ring” is installed which usually constitutes a small pool or a tub where some substance is placed. Another way – to anoint contestants’ bodies with oil before a match. Sometimes even boxing matches take place in substances. One more popular form of wrestling in liquid substances is various contests in water. A lot of forms exist here. For instance, wrestling in sumo-like style on a small raft installed in the middle of a swimming pool where losers fall (sometimes both contestants). Another case is a “horse battle” in a reservoir where girls are struggling “horseback” sitting on the shoulders of their partners (of either sex) and trying to take their opponents down into the water. Even underwater wrestling exists (with aqualungs and even without them). Female battle in reservoir is a popular subject in movies. On a DWW festival two girls engaged in impressive wrestling match in a small pond. In our opinion the shot of the match is one of the best among photographs devoted to women and sports. It’s easy to wrestle in water; it’s an excellent shock absorber, and it makes wrestling softer and pleasant. To complete the picture we can also consider wrestling in sand, which is a popular fun frequently represented in movies.

ARE THESE FEMALE WRESTLERS REALLY TOUGH?
CAN THEY BEAT A MAN?

Photo: Professional wrestling superstar, Jackie.

In a heart beat. The London Telegraph reported that two crouching sumo wrestlers lunge towards each other in a frenzy of flailing hands and slapping flesh. Grunts fill the air as the opponents collide. Less than a minute later, it is all over. The loser, a 120-kilogram mountain of muscle and fat, lies flat on his back, felled by a hip throw. The winner, 54-kilogram Chantal Freebury, bows low to her fallen rival. This dojo, or sumo ring, is in Derby in the English Midlands, and Freebury is not a typical sumo wrestler. Sumo has been a male-only martial art since it began in Japan 1300 years ago. No longer. Despite protests from purists, there are a slew of women-only international sumo contests and a female world champion. According to the International Sumo Federation, which oversees women's sumo, female wrestlers are now represented in 17 countries. At the headquarters of the British Sumo Federation, Freebury is dwarfed by her sparring partner. Like male wrestlers, she wears the traditional seven-metre-long mawashi loincloth. Hers, however, is tied over a demure black leotard. "I started doing sumo because I wanted to get in shape in a fun and exciting way," says Freebury, who trains with other female sumo enthusiasts in the area. "I have actually lost weight since I started learning sumo three years ago. It has really toned up my muscles." Steve Pateman, the sumo master who has coached Freebury for the past three years, says the sport is suited to women. "It is not just about brute force," he says. "Anyone can win through technique and guile."

THE QUEENS OF WRESTLING

 Photos, left & righ below: Former World Champion, Madusa (Debra Miceli) aka Alundra Blayze has an extensive pro-wrestling record.  She obtained her first title - the AWA Women's title - in December 1987. After losing the title, Madusa returned briefly to nursing. She captured the IWA World title, and at the end of 1990, she was voted All-Japan Inspirational Wrestler of the Year.

Women are even at an advantage because of their body shape. "Women tend to have shorter legs than men," he says. "Stability is everything in sumo, and women benefit because their centre of balance tends to be naturally closer to the ground." The risk of injury is minimal, too, because it is one of the more straightforward martial arts. The idea is to push your partner out of a 4.5-metre round ring, or force him or her to touch the ground with any part of their body other than the soles of their feet. There are 48 legitimate techniques for doing this, but kicking, punching and hair-pulling are not allowed. Psychological toughness is also key to winning sumo contests. Pateman says 90 per cent of a sumo bout has been won before it begins. He encourages Freebury to adopt a frightening demeanour, and giggling is forbidden. Ritualised eyeballing (shikiri) is as important as the wrestling. In Japan, sumo wrestlers stick to a diet of a rich broth of vegetables, dumplings and meat. Freebury prefers steak and pasta salads, and only on training days. Freebury clearly loves her sport, but she is not convinced it will become popular among women. "A lot of girls would like it if they gave it a try but they are intimidated by the look of it." In collaboration with our colleagues at the Russian Single Combat Club, in Moscow

Very popular and widespread show is (taped or demonstrated on the scene) – when women wrestle (but more often pretend they do) not for discovery of the strongest opponent but just for specific spectators’ amusement. In contrast to athletic competition, such a show just looks like wrestling match – much more important in it is a demonstration of combatants’ female delights in the contrasting atmosphere of the traditional male activity. In the most of such show untrained women imitate combative sports. Various shows with women wrestling are incredibly widespread – they are circulating in millions copies on video and on the WEB. Such a show imitates wrestling of two women (or sometimes several tangled bodies). Many female wrestling shows are taped for sale and propagated in photos, pictures, video clips, cartoons and comics.

THE QUEENS OF WRESTLING

Sometimes wrestlers act topless or nude. If wrestlers wear bikini at the beginning of the match unlikely they would be able to hold them at the proper body part until the very end – such show may be called “strip wrestling”. One of the new forms of strip wrestling is the Russian invention “Erotot” where girls are battling for tearing opponent’s clothes away. The girl who manages to expose an opponent first is declared a winner. The girls claim they fight for real and take pleasure in this competition (which seems to correspond to their natural bursts), although participating in the show is paid well. While you can imagine two topless women really boxing (if arranged not to punch to breasts), in a wrestling match unprotected breasts make it difficult to really wrestle. But from strip show perspective wrestling better than boxing allows demonstrating female delights in match dynamics.

Not all such shows are strip shows though. Variety of wrestling forms are organized: fat (tall, hairy) women wrestling, wrestling in any possible (and impossible) place: beach, meadow, snow, pond, bed – and many more. Many forms of so-called apartment wrestling may be classified as show wrestling. Usually such “wrestling” takes place on a king-size bed or next to it, which should remind spectators, some sweet things. Apartment wrestling is a favorite plot of movies and video films: two girls stay in a motel or one visits another at her home; they quarrel or just start amusing themselves. Then a “bed tussle” begins (sometimes with Lesbian nuances).

Photo: Molly Holly, the current World Wrestling Champion. She is highly respected in and outside the ring. She distinguished herself by her refined manners, classy attitude and finesse in her techniques. She has all the shining qualities of a real star.

In fact, the terms used in the show business are confusing: apartment wrestling, foxy wrestling or just wrestling (which usually means professional wrestling). The forms  differ by entourage (bed, ring or canvas) rather than by essence of combat. It’s difficult though to separate each form: staged wrestling matches, catfighting, apartment wrestling, bouts reminding professional wrestling, foxy wrestling and other shows. Like in boxing, mastery of wrestling techniques makes such shows closer to real amateur or professional wrestling. Example – wrestling matches in the DWW club. Female wrestling is organized for amusement of tipsy patrons of restaurants and nightclubs (for example, club foxy wrestling). Different forms of wrestling in substances (like mud of oil) are also very popular in clubs and restaurants. Mud slightly covers nakedness and oil makes female delights more piquant. It’s obviously that in a while pseudo wrestling shows will give away to more or less real women wrestling and more technical and physical skills will be required from show-women.

Women have successfully adjusted to all forms of wrestling and martial arts. That’s why pseudo-wrestling is becoming less interesting for the public.

THE DIVAS OF THE RING

“Men are afraid of me” Victoria Moreno

“I don't have a boyfriend nor would I want one. This is probably why men are not attracted to me because I bring out their superficialness” Zee

Photo, left: Photo: Debra, the Queen of Elegance of American Women’s Professional Wrestling. A former Miss Texas and Illinois.

Zee: “My opinion about female wrestlers who wrestle men for money? One step from prostitution. They degrade the sport by claiming they are real wrestlers but they are not real. Most of them don't train nor do they know how to wrestle… Because of my build and looks, I think people stay away from me. It's great because people leave me alone.”

IS WRESTLING DANGEROUS?

What wrestling means to a professional woman wrestler?

Photo: “Iron Woman” Victoria Moreno. One of the strongest and most skilled professional wrestler in the world. She fights men and knocked them like chicken. “Men are afraid if me “ she said.

In an interview, professional wrestler “Lady Victoria” explained: “Professional wrestling is "sports entertainment". We put our health on the line every time we step into the ring. Bruises and jammed joints are common. Must be athletic. Willing to listen and learn. No room for a big ego. There is no difference between male and female professional wrestling. I was trained with men. I wrestle like the men. I am not frail and would prefer to wrestle men. I have had many good matches with men. Not many ladies want to wrestle me. Men are afraid of me. Professional wrestling  is only fatal if a lady is not trained properly…I wrestle them for money. Have been doing this for 7 years. Grappling is also my sport of choice. I don’t wrestle for fun, This is how I make my living. I would go to jail if I were to fight on the street. I am a pro wrestler and could hurt anyone if I fight. I do not party or go to bars just because of this problem. I am very domestic. I have my husband, my home, my 3 dogs, 2 kids. I go to bed at 10:00. Don't do drugs, don't drink alcohol.

Sometime, I have to put all I have into it, but remember a good wrestler is not so much strong, but skilled. These x-bodybuilders you find out there are strong and have nice bodies, but can't give you a good match. Hell most of them just pin you right off and you lay under them for an hour. I am both strong, beautiful and skilled. It doesn't take strength to beat a guy 100 lbs more than me. It is all in the technique. The difference with me is that I know what I am doing and the guys can be assured, even in the most competitive match that they won't get hurt. I have heard so many horror stories about girls that just end up dislocating an arm or breaking a nose. This never happens with me. At least not yet... And no matter how competitive the match, it is still all for fun. We laugh, I tell jokes. Some guys just like to sit for a few minutes and catch up on all my latest news and enjoy the company.”

QUEENS OF THE RING

WOMEN AGAINST MEN___________________________________________________________

Popular shows of physical contest between women and men (mixed boxing, mixed wrestling) became big business. The idea of many of such contests (usually clumsy made) is to show power, combative abilities and superiority of women over men, ludicrousness and worthlessness of their opponents. The most of such “brawls” are held in home interior where women demonstrate “technique” using a clog as a device: she holds his head by legs, throws him up on her shoulders and throws him down to the ground – there are many types of such moves. Sometimes mixed contests represent wrestling and boxing but again, women always defeat men. At first glance, such a show should be popular among women because it would establish their self confidence and support feminism ideas.

But there are no women at all who are buyers of such videocassettes and mixed fight watchers – almost all pseudo fights are organized for men’s amusement including mixed fights. There is a store in New York  “Sports video” which is divided into three almost equal sections: regular sports, female combat and porno (with female wrestlers too), at that the last one is separated by a fence with a gate with the sign: “adult only”. In fact, you would be unable to see women in the two last sections (but could see many men) and more than 50% cassettes are with mixed combat. Perhaps, some deep complexes of some men are satisfied by watching of the shame of other men who get defeated and beaten by beautiful women (maybe some sadomasochistic motivation take place here).

At the same time, quite high technique level characterizes mixed boxing and wrestling shows organized by the DWW club which has quite well-trained female wrestlers and boxers It’s not easy to classified these contests as totally real or totally imitative..

Grappling with women for entertainment

Zee: “Almost everything is sexual with men, they even admit it as if it is a badge of honor. Or I should say men can make anything in their mind sexual.”

Photo: Zee (Zvyonzek) Vjesalicu (nickname is "The Pitbull"). Canadian combatant. Originally from Poltava, Ukraine (USSR). Left USSR in 1985. One of the best female extreme fighter, submission wrestler and Jiu-Jitsu player in the world. She is the real thing. No non-sense fighter.  Zee is a philosopher, a deep thinker, a lecturer and professional instructor of Asian martial arts. Her record:

 IFC (International Fighting Championships) - 2 times champion;
- Chicago Challenge - 2 times champion;
- World Extreme Fighting champion;
- Extreme Shoot Out champion;
- Canadian Open Jiu-Jitsu champion;

 In an interview, Zee explained:

QUEENS OF THE RING

The powerful combatant Zee “Pitbull” thinks that such services are slightly distinguished from prostitution.

Whatever someone thinks about this but it’s the fact that female physical combat attracts and excites men. But direct wrestling with a woman excites men even more. The other possible motivation is masochism. In the everyday life it’s unlikely that a regular woman would want or be able to wrestle with a man for his pleasure. That’s why a lot of agencies for men are created all over the world, which provide paid services of wrestlers. Hourly rates are established up for wrestling. One of the interviewed in our club combatants, Lady Victoria, insists that the most such female wrestlers are strong ladies who don’t have enough technical skills in wrestling - at the beginning of a “match” they just throw clients down and lie on top of them the rest of the scheduled time watching clocks. Lady Victoria, however said that honestly worked out her hours wrestling with her clients in her full strength. The powerful combatant Zee “Pitbull” thinks that such services are slightly distinguished from prostitution.   Iused to fight men but the more I would win the more female opponents was cut down because the women thought that if I was beating the men, then they would not want to fight for fear of losing. Or just that they would never fight a man to begin with. So, they saw me as beating men... as something special. I train only with men as there are no women close to train with for me. I don't care who or what I train with as long as they realize it is training. If I want to actually fight then I set up ring time for that. But, in training I want to be pushed but only as far as I see I will get something out of it. Тraining is not the time to be foolish nor try to injure your partner. Training is to test your skills and determination, not injure someone. At this time, I don't think women and men would be equal. I don't think society is ready for women being able to actually beat men in combat sports. I know there are guys I have beaten but this does not mean that I can beat every guy out there. I am also trying to help promote the women side of the sport. By fighting men I think it would only drive women out of the sport. I want to encourage... not discourage! I don't care about my looks in general. I tell everyone who shows interest in combat activities that if you are into the way you look, don't bother because you will get hit or cut. All I care about when I am fighting is showing my combative SKILLS. Looks have nothing to do with fighting as it is not a beauty contest. I don't have a boyfriend nor would I want one. Sorry but my training is more important to me than anyone at this time. I don't even talk about physical superiority over anyone, even men. I am myself but I don't challenge guys because I think challenging should be done in the ring, not to people who know nothing about the sport. Challenging untrained guys is like being a bully, which I am not. My close friends like what I do and respect it. I think people are too caught up on how people look. What I do, I like. The kind of person I am and if I have a good heart should be much more important than the way I look. I prefer to be on equal footing with people, male or female... not superior nor inferior. Just equal. I know that there will be things in life that I will be better at, as they will have things that they are better at. If I were to ever have a guy who was weaker or stronger physically... so what?? This is probably why men are not attracted to me because I bring out their superficialness. In the who span of life strength or physical prowess means nothing as there is so much more to life than this. Attractiveness is not my concern. If people like me, fine. If they don't, well that is their problem. I was not put on this earth for men or women. I was put here to make a difference in the things I do. Actions speak louder than words. Build has nothing to do with skills. Men make this mistake all the time. I once had this fight with someone who was built along the lines of a bodybuilder and they "looked" like they could kick anyone's butt, including mine. Well when It came to fighting skills, there were none. I don't compare myself to women, I compare myself to my performances in past competitions. I am only concerned with that I do, not others. Thinking about what other people do only takes my mind off my goals. I know that there is this social thing where women size each other up in regards to looking for a mate/male etc... well I don't live in that world. So, hence there is no reason to compare or compete with them. In the fighting arena it is about who wins with skills, not looks. So in regards to ones build, looks can be confusing. I may not have a bodybuilders physique but my body works fine for what I want it to do. I have a functional muscular build. think men get off watching anything a woman does. I am a fighter not a T&A model... So I would like to think that if someone is watching ME fight they are looking at my skills and being impressed by that. Almost everything is sexual with men, they even admit it as if it is a badge of honor. Or I should say men can make anything in their mind sexual…

Wrestling is only a show? It's bullshit. What I do is real, not staged. I got the scars to prove it. I don't care how much money I was offered I would never sell out to do some skunk sexual show for entertainment for anyone. These types of entertainment should not be mentioned in the same breath of what I do. It is insulting. My opinion about female wrestlers who wrestle men for money? One step from prostitution. They degrade the sport by claiming they are real wrestlers but they are not real. Most of them don't train nor do they know how to wrestle… No, never fought a woman in a street fight. Because of my build and looks, I think people stay away from me. It's great because people leave me alone.”

I hope that you have enjoyed our journey to the world of women’s professional wrestling. You met them all. All the stars and all the divas. The flashy-dashy, the exhibitionists, the sweet models, the nurses, the stunt women, the truck drivers, the bones crashers, the thinkers, the elegant and classy, the actresses and the CEO, the tough cookies and the beauty queens…They are the fabric of that world. A world we don’t understand but we enjoy to glimpse at and watch those divas punching and kicking each other. Whether it is real of fake, we still pay $50 for a wrestling match ticket, because they are there. So, something must be real, something attracts us to them. What is it? Fantasies? Escapades? Self-illusion? Delusion perhaps? Entertainment? The smell of blood? The contours of their bodies? The follies? The screaming of the crowd? The human circus? Sex? Voyeurism? Acrobatics? Sport? Showmanship? The hysteria of the spectators? Idol Cult? Action? YOU DECIDE!
